Gannett to buy Fairfax for $3.2B

GEORGIA — The company that has run Georgia’s largest newspaper for the past two decades and a longtime fixture of the state’s political scene is poised to purchase the largest newspaper in the United States.

News Corp. is buying Fairfax Media, a subsidiary of Time Inc. that includes The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.

The merger will create a newspaper empire worth $3 billion.

“The combined company will create an unparalleled media company, with an unparalleled team of reporters, editors and writers.

The combined company has a proven track record of delivering high quality content, a diverse audience and a highly diverse audience of consumers across the U.S.”

GEORGAN NEWS AND GLOBAL RACE The merger could make the Washington, D.C.-based newspaper the largest in the country, according to the Wall Street Street Journal.

“This deal will create the biggest newspaper in Washington, DC and beyond, with a workforce of more than 200 reporters, a staff of more the same and an audience of more of the same,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of

Journal will increase the total number of U.s. newspapers owned by Time Inc., which includes The New York Times, The Washington Times, USA Today and USA Today Co., to nearly 300, according an analysis of the companies combined financials released last month by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.


Journal was the top-ranked newspaper in The United States from 2001 through 2012, the most recent year for which data is available.

The Journal also was the No. 1 newspaper in California, New York and Washington, but the top newspaper in Florida, according a report by The WallStreet Journal in 2015.

TIME WAS A MEMBER OF THE JOURNALISM COMMISSION For years, the Journal’s Washington bureau chief, Jennifer Dzioba, was its editor-in-chief.

In December, the newspaper announced that the position had been eliminated, though it had been a member of the newspaper’s editorial board since 2013.

TIME AND THE LAND BOUND GEORGES NEWS AND LAND The newsroom at the Journal, where the paper has its headquarters, was located in an old industrial building in the town of Glynnwood, which is about 20 miles northwest of Washington, the capital.

Its main building is about a mile away.

The newspaper’s editor, Eric Alterman, is the son of a lawyer and the grandson of an Episcopal minister.

The building is owned by the Glynnwoods Corporation, a company that owns a small piece of the city of Glynwell and has an office in the former U. S. Post Office building.

The Glynn Woods Corporation has no involvement with the newspaper.

The Washington, which has a population of about 7.5 million, has a total of about 5,600 employees.
